Concrete patios are an attractive and durable outdoor addition to any home. With proper preparation, pouring and finishing, you can have a professional-looking patio in no time. Here’s what you need to know to get the job done correctly.
First, measure the space for your patio. Allow for extra width and length for the framing and for the desired thickness of the concrete. You will also need to excavate the area and ensure that the soil is properly compacted.
Next, build the forms for the patio. Use wood or steel to create the outside edge that will shape the patio. Secure the form boards into place with stakes and make sure the form is level. If you plan to have a slope, make sure to adjust the boards accordingly. After the form is in place, install a layer of gravel and compact it with a hand tamper.
Once the form is set, it’s time to mix the concrete. This can be done with a rented mixer or by hand. If mixing by hand, use a shovel to mix the concrete with water in a wheelbarrow. Once you have the desired consistency, start pouring the concrete into the form. Use a rake or trowel to spread the concrete evenly and level it off.
Finally, to finish the job, use a hand float to smooth out the surface and add texture if desired. After the concrete has set, remove the forms and sweep away any excess gravel. Let the concrete cure for at least three days before walking on it, and enjoy your new patio!
